Disability Support Pension for Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder are among the conditions most likely to qualify for DSP, particularly where symptoms are chronic and significantly impair daily functioning. Many people with schizophrenia qualify under manifest eligibility if their condition is clearly severe.

Impairment Tables Assessment
Schizophrenia is assessed under Impairment Table 5 — Mental Health Function. Chronic schizophrenia with persistent positive or negative symptoms typically scores 15-20 points on this table alone. Negative symptoms (flat affect, social withdrawal, cognitive impairment) are particularly relevant as they directly affect work capacity.
Evidence Needed
- *Psychiatrist reports confirming diagnosis and treatment history
- *Evidence of ongoing antipsychotic medication and monitoring
- *Records of hospitalisations and community mental health team involvement
- *Functional assessments documenting impact on daily living, self-care, and social interaction
- *Reports from community mental health case managers if applicable
- *Evidence of cognitive impairment if present (neuropsychological testing)
Application Tips
- *Schizophrenia may qualify for manifest eligibility if the condition is clearly severe and permanent — ask your psychiatrist to support this
- *Document negative symptoms (withdrawal, flat affect, cognitive deficits) as these affect work capacity more than positive symptoms
- *Community mental health team records are strong supporting evidence
- *If you have a Public Guardian or are on a Community Treatment Order, include this evidence
- *Ensure your psychiatrist confirms the condition is chronic and unlikely to remit to the point of allowing 15+ hours of work per week
- *Family or carer statements about your daily functioning can support your claim
Disability Medical Assessment (DMA)
Many schizophrenia claims are granted without a DMA if the medical evidence is strong. If a DMA is required, the assessment considers your mental state, daily functioning, treatment adherence, and cognitive capacity. Having a support person present is recommended.
Partial Capacity to Work
Most people with chronic schizophrenia are assessed as having a capacity of 0-7 hours per week, which strongly supports DSP. Even if you can do some sheltered or supported work, this does not necessarily mean you can work 15+ hours in open employment.
Appeal Rights
If your DSP claim is rejected, you have the right to appeal. First, request an internal review by an Authorised Review Officer (ARO) within 13 weeks of the decision. If the ARO upholds the rejection, you can appeal to the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART, formerly AAT) within 13 weeks. New medical evidence can be submitted at each stage. Around 40% of DSP appeals at the ART are successful. Free legal help is available from Legal Aid and disability advocacy organisations.
Income & Assets Tests
DSP is subject to both an income test and an assets test. Singles can earn up to $204 per fortnight before their payment is reduced (50c per dollar above). Single homeowners can have up to $314,000 in assets for the full payment. Couples have a combined income free area of $360/fn and assets limit of $470,000 (homeowner).
