What are the current Centrelink deeming rates for 2025-26?

The current deeming rates for 2025-26 are 0.25% per annum on the first $62,600 of financial assets for singles ($103,800 for couples), and 2.25% per annum on assets above that threshold. These rates have been in effect since 1 July 2023.

What is deeming and how does it work?

Deeming is how Centrelink estimates income from your financial assets, regardless of what those assets actually earn. Instead of assessing your actual investment returns, Centrelink applies standard deeming rates to the total value of your financial assets. The deemed income is then counted under the income test for payments like the Age Pension.

What assets are subject to deeming?

Financial assets subject to deeming include: bank accounts, term deposits, shares and securities, managed funds and trusts, superannuation (if you are Age Pension age), bonds and debentures, and loans you have made to other people. Your home, real estate, cars, and personal property are not deemed — they are assessed under the assets test separately.

Are deeming rates the same as the RBA cash rate?

No, deeming rates are set by the Minister for Social Services and do not automatically change with the RBA cash rate. They are separate policy rates. The lower deeming rate has been 0.25% since 1 May 2020, while the RBA cash rate has moved independently since then.

Is my super subject to deeming?

Super is only subject to deeming if you have reached Age Pension age (currently 67). If you are under Age Pension age, your super is generally exempt from both the income test and the assets test, even if you are receiving another Centrelink payment like JobSeeker or DSP.
