Which concession cards work in Tasmania
Tasmania recognises the Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), Health Care Card (HCC), and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) for state concessions. Tasmania also issues its own Tasmanian Seniors Card for residents aged 60 and over, which provides discounts at participating businesses statewide.
The PCC provides the most comprehensive access to concessions — energy, water, rates, transport, and registration. The HCC qualifies for energy concessions and transport discounts. The CSHC provides energy concessions and transport benefits.
The Tasmanian Government's Concessions Guide, available through Service Tasmania, lists all available concessions by card type. Given Tasmania's higher energy costs and lower average incomes, these concessions can make a real difference.
Energy and electricity rebates
Tasmania's Electricity Concession provides a rebate of $277 per year for PCC holders, applied to your Aurora Energy account. This is paid as a quarterly credit of approximately $69.25.
HCC and CSHC holders also qualify for the electricity concession at the same rate. You need to register your concession card details with Aurora Energy to receive it.
The Heating Allowance provides an additional $100 per year for PCC holders to help with heating costs — particularly useful in Tasmania's colder climate. This is applied to your electricity account.
The Aurora Energy Hardship Program provides additional support for customers struggling to pay bills, including payment plans, restrictions on disconnection, and referrals to financial counselling. If you're finding it hard to manage energy costs even with the concession, contact Aurora Energy's customer support team.
Water and rates concessions
TasWater provides a concession on water and sewerage charges for PCC holders. The rebate is approximately $148 per year on combined water and sewerage charges. This is applied directly to your TasWater account.
The concession applies to your principal place of residence. You need to be the account holder or the property owner. Register your PCC with TasWater — it's a one-off application that auto-renews while your card remains current.
HCC and CSHC holders are generally not eligible for the water concession in Tasmania, though TasWater has hardship provisions for customers experiencing financial difficulty.
Transport discounts
Metro Tasmania provides concession fares for PCC, HCC, and CSHC holders across Hobart, Launceston, and Burnie bus networks. The concession fare is approximately half the adult fare — a standard Greencard concession fare in Hobart is around $1.68 per trip.
Seniors Card holders in Tasmania receive free off-peak travel on Metro Tasmania services — specifically between 9:00am and 4:30pm on weekdays and all day on weekends and public holidays.
The Transport Access Scheme provides a 50% taxi subsidy (up to $25 per trip) for people unable to use public transport due to disability. Eligible participants receive a membership card to use with participating taxi operators statewide.
Tasmania doesn't have trains for commuter use, so bus concessions are the main public transport benefit.
Vehicle registration discounts
PCC holders in Tasmania receive a 50% concession on motor vehicle registration fees. For a standard passenger vehicle, this saves approximately $150 to $250 per year depending on the vehicle type.
The concession applies to one vehicle per eligible person. Motor Accident Insurance Board (MAIB) premiums are not discounted — the saving applies to the registration component only.
Apply the concession when registering or renewing through Service Tasmania. Provide your PCC details and the discount is applied immediately. Online renewal is available through the Service Tasmania website.
Medical and prescription benefits
The PBS concession rate of $7.70 per script applies for all concession card holders in Tasmania, with free prescriptions after reaching the $262.80 Safety Net threshold.
Tasmania's Oral Health Services provides free dental care for PCC and HCC holders through public dental clinics across the state. Services include check-ups, fillings, extractions, and dentures. Waiting times for general dental care are typically 3 to 12 months, with emergency care available much sooner.
The Tasmanian Spectacles Scheme provides free spectacles for PCC holders every two years, including single-vision and multifocal lenses with a selection of frames. Access this through approved optometrists listed with the Department of Health.
Council rate concessions
Tasmanian councils provide rate remissions to eligible PCC holders. The state government provides a rates remission of up to $213 per year (indexed annually) which is administered through local councils. This is deducted directly from your rates notice.
Individual councils may provide additional voluntary concessions on top of the state-mandated amount. Contact your council to find out if they offer anything extra.
To qualify, you must own the property and live in it as your principal residence. Joint owners where both hold a PCC still only receive one remission per property. Apply through your local council with your PCC details.
Other Tasmania-specific benefits
Ambulance Tasmania provides free ambulance transport for PCC holders — both emergency and non-emergency clinically necessary transport. This saves approximately $900 or more per ambulance trip compared to non-covered patients.
The Tasmanian Companion Card program allows carers of people with significant disabilities to attend events for free. The scheme is accepted at venues and events across the state.
Fishing licence concessions provide a reduced-cost recreational fishing licence for concession card holders — approximately 50% off the standard adult licence fee.
The Private Land Conservation Program and other environmental programs may provide rate remissions for landholders who conserve significant natural values on their property, which can stack with pensioner concessions in some cases. Energy-efficient home upgrade programs periodically offer subsidised insulation and heating upgrades for concession card holders — check the Tasmanian Government website for current programs.
