Which concession cards work in Queensland

Queensland recognises the Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), Health Care Card (HCC), and Commonwealth Seniors Health Card (CSHC) for state government concessions. Queensland also has its own Seniors Card for residents aged 65 and over (or 60 and over if permanently retired), which provides discounts at participating businesses.

The PCC gives access to the full range of concessions — electricity, rates, transport, registration, and more. The HCC qualifies for electricity rebates and transport concessions but fewer other benefits. The CSHC provides access to electricity rebates and some transport concessions.

Queensland Smart Savings is the state government's concessions hub where you can check all available discounts based on your card type. It's worth checking regularly as new concessions are added periodically.

Energy and electricity rebates

Queensland's Electricity Rebate provides $372 per year for PCC, HCC, and Queensland Seniors Card holders. This is applied as a credit to your electricity bill — approximately $93 per quarter. It's one of the simpler energy concessions in Australia: a flat dollar amount regardless of how much you use.

The Reticulated Natural Gas Rebate provides $75.92 per year for eligible card holders connected to mains gas. For those in South East Queensland where gas connections are more common, this is a useful additional saving.

The Home Energy Emergency Assistance Scheme (HEEAS) provides one-off emergency assistance of up to $720 per year to help pay electricity or gas bills if you're experiencing financial hardship. You don't need a concession card for this — it's available to any Queensland household in genuine hardship.

If you use medical cooling or heating equipment, you may qualify for additional rebates. Contact your electricity retailer to discuss options.

Water and rates concessions

Water concessions in Queensland are managed at the local council level rather than by the state government, so they vary significantly depending on where you live.

Brisbane City Council provides a water and sewerage rebate of approximately $240 per year for PCC holders. Other South East Queensland councils offer similar rebates, typically in the range of $120 to $250 per year.

Regional councils generally offer some form of pensioner water concession, but the amount and eligibility criteria vary. Contact your local council directly to find out what's available in your area.

It's worth noting that some councils require you to apply each year, while others auto-renew. Don't leave money on the table — check with your council if you're not sure whether you're receiving everything you're entitled to.

Transport discounts

Queensland concession card holders receive 50% off adult fares on TransLink services across South East Queensland, including buses, trains, ferries, and the Gold Coast light rail. This applies to PCC, HCC, and CSHC holders using a concession go card.

For Seniors Card holders, TransLink offers a special daily cap of $2.50 on weekdays after 8:30am and all day on weekends and public holidays. This is one of the best travel deals in Queensland — unlimited travel across the TransLink network for $2.50 a day.

In regional Queensland, Qconnect bus services offer concession fares for card holders. Long-distance Queensland Rail services also offer 50% concession fares for eligible card holders.

The Taxi Subsidy Scheme provides a 50% subsidy on taxi fares (up to a maximum of $25 per trip) for people who are unable to use public transport due to a severe disability. Application is separate from holding a concession card.

Vehicle registration discounts

PCC holders in Queensland receive a concession on vehicle registration. The discount varies by vehicle type but is typically around 50% off the registration component, saving approximately $170 to $300 per year for a standard passenger vehicle.

The concession applies to one vehicle per eligible person. If you and your partner both hold PCCs, you can each claim on one vehicle. CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance is separate and not discounted, though some CTP insurers offer reduced premiums for low-kilometre vehicles.

To claim the concession, provide your PCC details when registering or renewing through the Department of Transport and Main Roads. You can do this online, at a transport service centre, or through an approved inspection station.

Medical and prescription benefits

The national PBS concession rate of $7.70 per script and the Safety Net threshold of $262.80 apply in Queensland as in all states. Once you reach the Safety Net, prescriptions are free for the remainder of the calendar year.

Queensland Health provides free public dental services for PCC holders through its Oral Health Program. Services include check-ups, fillings, extractions, and dentures. Waiting times vary by region — metro areas can have waits of 6 months or more, while regional areas are sometimes shorter.

The Community Aids, Equipment and Assistive Technology Initiative (CAEATI) provides subsidised or free equipment for people with disabilities, including wheelchairs, mobility aids, and communication devices. A concession card isn't required, but holding one may assist with eligibility.

Council rate concessions

Queensland councils offer rate concessions to PCC holders, but unlike some states, there's no state-mandated minimum. Each council sets its own rebate. Brisbane City Council offers a rates concession of approximately $200 per year for eligible PCC holders.

Gold Coast City Council, Moreton Bay Regional Council, and other major councils offer rebates typically in the $150 to $250 range. Smaller regional councils may offer less, but some offset this with higher percentage discounts on lower base rates.

You must be the owner and occupier of the property, and it must be your principal place of residence. Apply through your local council — most require an annual application or renewal, though some have moved to automatic renewal once initially set up.

Other Queensland-specific benefits

Queensland's Spectacle Supply Scheme provides free spectacles to eligible PCC holders every two years. The scheme covers single-vision, bifocal, and multifocal lenses with a selection of standard frames. You'll need a current prescription from an optometrist and a referral from your GP or optometrist.

The Electricity Life Support Concession provides additional rebates for people who require life support equipment at home, such as oxygen concentrators or ventilators.

PCC holders are exempt from ambulance service fees in Queensland, which is a significant benefit given that a single emergency ambulance call-out can cost $1,016 or more for non-members. This exemption covers both emergency and medically necessary ambulance transport.

Fishing concessions include a 50% discount on recreational fishing permits for concession card holders. Various national parks also offer concession rates on camping fees.
