Your concession card is worth thousands — are you using it?

One thing people miss: If you hold a Pensioner Concession Card (PCC) or Health Care Card (HCC), you're entitled to a wide range of discounts and concessions offered by both the Commonwealth and your state or territory government. Most people know about the pharmaceutical benefits, but many have no idea about the energy rebates, transport concessions, council rate discounts, car registration savings, and water bill reductions available to them. The total value of these concessions can easily exceed $2,000–$4,000 per year, depending on your state and circumstances.

Yet surveys consistently show that a large proportion of concession card holders don't claim everything they're entitled to. This guide is organised state by state. Find your state below and check every item on the list. If you're not claiming something, contact the relevant provider and register your concession card. **Which cards qualify?** Most state concessions are available to holders of the Pensioner Concession Card (issued to Age Pension, DSP, and Carer Payment recipients) and the Health Care Card (issued to JobSeeker, Youth Allowance, Parenting Payment, and low-income earners).

Some concessions are limited to PCC holders only — these are noted where applicable. DVA Gold Card holders generally receive the same concessions as PCC holders.

How to claim your concessions: a checklist

Many concessions are not applied automatically. You need to actively register your concession card with each provider.

Here's a practical checklist: **1. Energy retailer** Call your electricity and gas provider and give them your concession card number. This activates your energy rebate.

The practical side: Do this for both electricity and gas if you've separate accounts. **2. Water authority** Contact your water provider and register your PCC for water and sewerage concessions. In most states, this is only available to PCC holders (not HCC). **3.

Local council** Call your local council and apply for the pensioner rates rebate. You usually need to complete a form once, and the discount is then applied automatically each year.

Most councils need you to be the owner-occupier of the property. **4. Transport card** Get a concession transport card (Opal, myki, go Card, SmartRider, etc.) from your local transport office. You will need to show your concession card. **5.

Car registration** When renewing your vehicle registration, provide your PCC to receive the discount. In most states, this can be done online. **6. Pharmacy** Show your concession card every time you fill a prescription to receive the PBS concession rate of $7.70 per script instead of the general rate of $31.60. **7.

GP clinic** Ask your GP whether they bulk-bill concession card holders. Many do.

What actually happens: If yours doesn't, consider switching to one that does. **8. Dental** Contact your state's public dental service and register for free or subsidised dental care. Wait times can be long — get on the list now even if you don't need immediate treatment. **9.

Ambulance** Check whether your state provides free ambulance to concession card holders. In WA and NT, you may need separate ambulance cover — check and sign up if needed. **10. Other** Check your state government website for additional concessions you may not know about — spectacles, fishing licences, national park passes, companion cards, and more. Doing all of this takes a few hours, but the savings can be thousands of dollars per year.

If you need help navigating the system, call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 — their financial counsellors can point you in the right direction.
